Hello to you, Reader.
This is my first blog for my page here, something I didn't expect to be writing tonight; I've been so preoccupied with end-of-semester activities. Yet here I am, and I'm not entirely positive about how my site and things will work, but I wanted, briefly, to talk about my Dream for Adopt A Dream. I got third prize (thanks Liz, All) in the contest during March. My Dream then was to found an alternative school... But that dream, since, has evolved into a writing school (of sorts). What I want to do is start an Editing business. That is to say, I have been imagining this thing in my head for a while, and I wanted to combine it with my initial foray into the Dream world.
I have a name for it (but I'm going to keep that secret, hehe). But what I want is a building decorated in an orange-brown-green-black-white theme (I know what order and combination I have in mind, but I'll detail that later on). It would be an editing business at heart, but I want the front to develop into a writing mecca, so to say. There would be a writing center, computers for writers to work on (and a few for people needing help with school writing assignments), a community bulletin board, ways to contact publishers, and an entire editing business in the back. I want for there to be a mini-library for research, and a coffee area for those who come to write. (What writer is complete without something addicting to drink?) Then again, there's plenty more I could say about how I want it to look and be.
This place - I will call is WB, for now (its initials) - would help anybody who wanted to learn how to write, how to write better, freely make contacts, network, cooperate with local schools, help one another and others in the community with their writing, and it would also be an editing business. I want the core of this Dream to be an editing business for a couple reasons:
1) I'm good at it. I am a born writer - aspiring author, once I have just a bit more personal time on my hands after college is out. I have been helping others write for a really long time... back to the early days of high school back in 1999. I've been in advanced placement writing classes, I've won a couple writing acknowledgements, and I have been working in a writing computer lab from June 2006 (though I will have to resign that this fall, because I have to student teach in Spring 2009).
2) An editing business would be a good start for launching other spects of my Dream. If I start with editing - a task I can, and happily, pursue on my lonesome - I can really branch out. I would likely start with a couple fellows to help me expand the editing aspect of my business. After some funds are saved, then I can start coloring in the other parts of the business I desire, really work with the community, whatever community in which I settle the hub of my Dream. I like the freedom of expression I feel when thinking about this Dream.
3) I have more ideas in mind on this end, though, but editing provides a sturdy basis for the other writing elements. Having trained editors on hand would help people who come to the front side of the editing business to develop their talents.
And really, that's what I want to do - help people make more of what they have. I have been training since 2003 to be an English teacher for high school, but what I think I really want out of it is to be more of an entrepreneur in regards to teaching. I want to edit. I want to write for a living. I want to help others do the same. I want to help my brother realize his writing dream, not simply be another school teacher in his life.
I think my first step in this process would be to get WB off the ground by founding a website and then working from there. I would need to make the appropriate contacts in order to get the business. From there, I can make it a reality.
